In this episode of The Fly Tying Station, Stuart Webb shows us how to tie a fly that works incredibly well when it comes to targeting giant trevally on the flats. This fly was originally developed by Alphonse Fishing Co. guide Cameron Musgrave two years ago and has since been one of our top fly choices for targeting multiple flats species!
Giant trevally has in the past been referred to as being the gangsters of the flats, and they have a reputation for being bullish and unforgiving. They prey on almost anything that moves, from crabs, lobsters and squid, to eels and mantis shrimps. That is why the garlic butter is the perfect choice when it comes to imitating one of the GT’s favourite snacks, namely the squid.
This specific version of the garlic butter is a bit smaller than the original. It’s lightweight, realistic and creates incredible movement in the water which makes them irresistible to any cruising GT.
Not only does this fly work exceptionally well to lure in the GT, but there is a range of other species in the Outer Islands of the Seychelles like the bluefin trevally, grouper, barracuda and snapper who also find this fly irresistible.
The garlic butter is a staple in our fly tying boxes and we would highly recommend this fly to anyone who is thinking of taking on the GT! This is usually accompanied by another staple, namely the NYAP fly. (learn how to tie this below)
