Amirante Islands

The Amirante Islands are made up by the Desroches, Étoile, D’Arros, Marie Louise, Desnoeufs, Boudeuse, African Banks, Rémire Reef, St. Joseph’s Atoll, and Poivre Atoll. Despite being discovered in 1503, they are largely unpopulated and are one of the most desirable fishing destinations for both fly fishing and offshore fishing.

Poivre Atoll is made up of two smaller islands, Poivre and Île du Sud. Separated by a shallow lagoon that extends back to Île du Sud during high tide, this coral atoll offers stunning flats and one of the best blue water fishing areas. The sheer drop-offs, which step from 60 to 12 000 metres in a matter of kilometres, lends itself to rich currents and various fish species.

Fly Fishing at the amirante islands

The Amirante Islands offers the best of both worlds with mind-blowing flats that will make any fly fishing enthusiast’s toes curl, right alongside thrilling blue water fishing targeting species like sailfish, wahoo and yellowfin tuna. It is particularly well-known for its world-class species like bonefish, Indo-Pacific permit and the occasional giant trevally on the flats.

At Poivre, there is an area called “the Kennels”, so-called for the record-breaking sized dogtooth tuna you can target here, with the current record fish caught standing at 75 kgs. Also, for experienced fly fishermen, Poivre Atoll offers a unique and incredible opportunity for targeting saltwater fish species like bonefish, Indo-Pacific permit and giant trevally on the flats.
