FLY TYING LESSON – HOW TO TIE THE SPAWNING SHRIMP
In this week’s episode of The Fly Tying Station, Alphonse Fishing Co. guide Angus Forsyth will be showing us how to tie the Spawning Shrimp. This fly works exceptionally well when it comes to targeting the Indo-Pacific permit and some of our other favourite flats species such as bonefish, bluefin trevally and even triggerfish.
This is a fly that has a realistic look. As the name states, it imitates a shrimp carrying a belly full of eggs, making a scrumptious potential meal! The reason it works so well is that it’s one of the biggest permit flies we use. The bigger the fly, the bigger the reward will be for the fish. Usually, there is a very positive and aggressive reaction when presenting this to a fish.
The permit is known to be extremely sensitive to their surroundings and spook more easily than any other fish. Luckily the Spawning Shrimp is made of super lightweight materials to ensure a soft landing and minimal water disturbance.
Here are the materials you will need to tie the spawning shrimp:
- Gamakatsu – SLS12 SZ. 2
- Grip – Nylon Blend Orange
- Fishient Group – Crystal Flash
- Fishient Group – Zonker Tan
- Fishient Group – Craft Fur Grizzly
- Wapsy – Silly Legs
- Tungsten – Dumbbell Eyes
