Astove Fly Fishing Season 2019 | 24 January – 04 February 2019
The third week in to our 2019 Astove Atoll fly fishing season saw two guests join us for a true private island experience. Return guest Teemu Juutinen and Patagonia ambassador Jasper Pakkonen came to see what Astove had to offer them for an incredible 10-day trip. The first few days were a mix of weather, some very low light, and challenging wind made spotting fish very difficult.
However, seeing triggerfish stick their tails out the shallow crystal clear water made things slightly more approachable. With the first part of their stay starting on the back end of a spring tide left a good depth of water for us to be able to wander out to the edges of the reef. The agreed upon target for the week was the notorious Giant Trevally.
Both Teemu and Jasper have fished for these explosive fish before. We were fortunate enough this week to have a good number of fish moving around in the shallow water around the reef and on the beaches. Later in the week as the tides slowed down this made for incredible fishing from ‘The Cliffs’ and other beach areas where it surprises even the most experienced GT fisherman how close into the shore these fish will wonder.
Some really big fish were seen and unfortunately, both Teemu and Jasper struggled with some bad luck and didn’t manage to tail a massive fish.
They did, however, finish the week off with 27 GT’s with the largest fish stretching the tape to 85 cm and three Moustachetrigger fish.
An incredible week of fishing with some exceptional experiences.
