ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT (3 – 10 DEC 2022)

    11 December 2022

    ALPHONSE ISLAND FISHING NEWS | 3 – 10 DECEMBER 2022

It was an exciting week on St Francois, the right tides paired with the right weather caused some truly amazing scenes. We witnessed a great phenomenon where the bait gather on Tam Tam flat in the safety of the shallows at dead low tide. The GTs, unable to reach them, congregate in the lagoon on the edge of the flat as they await for the tide to start pushing.

The pushing tide on the western side of St Francois pushed extremely hot into the lagoon, so the water was full of dazed-off bait fish. The GTs caught on quickly and the guides and anglers watched schools of 30 to 50 GTs at a time push up into the flats and begin to hunt.

It was an absolute feeding frenzy, a privilege to witness, the guests and guides will certainly look back on this week as one to remember!

The biggest fish that came out of the shoal on the warm water push was 108 cm, as well as a 97 cm and a good few fish above 80 cm as well. The total GT tally was at 12 at the end of the week. The guides are anticipating fishing the shoal in the weeks following!

It was also a good week with regards to the triggers, there are plenty at the moment, in the surf, on the fingers, and on the bombers in the lagoons. Two yellowmargin and four moustache triggerfish were landed, they were all well-sized, with one of the yellowmargin’s landed off a pancake flat in the top lagoon being an impressive 53 cm.

    Tight lines,
Alphonse Fishing Co. on Alphonse Island

    TOTAL CATCH STATS THIS WEEK:
    Bonefish 96
    Giant trevally 12
    Moustache triggerfish 4
    Yellowmargin triggerfish 1
