COSMOLEDO ATOLL FLY FISHING REPORT (2 – 9 Mar 2023)

    10 March 2023

    COSMOLEDO FISHING NEWS | 2 – 9 MARCH 2023

During this week on Cosmoledo, the full moon spring tides seemed to have arrived later in the week than usual. The lagoon water at the beginning of the week was green due to hot windless days over the previous week’s neap tides. As a result, surf walks started earlier than usual to try and avoid the green lagoon water, and this resulted in a good number of triggers being caught in the surf zone even over the low tides.

The giant trevally were seen in the surf zone too, also as a result of the green water within the lagoon. As the week progressed and the tides got larger, more fresh water from outside the atoll was pushed into the lagoon. This resulted in the lagoon flushing out towards the end of the week and the giant trevally fishing within the lagoon became better as the week progressed.

The geets were frequent in rays and sharks as the water started to creep over the flats. Fish were coming in with their tails and dorsal fins out of the water as they desperately wanted to get onto the flats to feed. The fish on rays presented easy targets for an hour or two while the water was still creeping up the flats and bow wakes and fins sticking out the water allowed for easy spotting of fish.

Luke Peterson managed to catch himself five giant trevally in a day on Cosmoledo in the south-western corner of the atoll. He also picked up a couple of Cosmo’s big bonefish to end the day.

Alec Gerbec and Jason Spelling managed to catch five fish collectively on a surf walk together in the northern stretches of the atoll. Jason was able to snatch an 88 cm giant trevally out of the surf for himself! While Alec Gerbec managed to get a 93 cm fish to hand. Both are incredible fish to catch in the surf, well done gents.

Stay tuned for the next report from Cosmo!

    Tight lines,
