ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT (4 – 11 MAR 2023)

    12 March 2023

    ALPHONSE ISLAND FISHING NEWS | 4 – 11 MARCH 2023

St. Francois threw a bit of everything at us this week with a heap of fish and a multitude of species being landed. The geets and triggers were behaving as if they’d been fasting for a good week, eating most patterns if they were well-presented. Usually, when there are so many fish being hauled in on the flats the average size takes a knock, but not this week.

The biggest geet of the week was an impressive fish of 100 cm on the nose, caught by Paul, a guest who has been searching for a fish of these proportions for nearly 5 years. Paul landed a few smaller fish early on in the week but kept on pursuing his dream fish and finally nailed one in Tam Tam Channel on the pushing tide. Well done to Paul on the meter GT, a well-deserved fish if ever there was one.

The weather was unblemished the whole week, showing off some picturesque postcard material, and sunny Seychelles seems to be back to true form.

With the most incredible GT tides, it was inevitable that a lot of them would be seen on the flats during the course of the week. However, seeing them is only half the job done. Catching them on sunny windless days can sometimes prove challenging, but the sheer number of shots given to the anglers made for a great week on the GT front. A total of 21 fish came to hand with the average size breaking the 70 cm threshold. Three of these fish were over 80 cm – Paul having caught two of them.

Surprisingly the triggers were wild on the coral fingers with a season record of 12 fish being landed for the week. The tides were definitely not the most conducive to catching triggers, but this atoll is full of surprises and the guide team had a secret weapon this week – his name is Reece.

Reece deserves a special mention this week for guiding 10 triggerfish and six GTs, his biggest geet being a healthy 90 cm fish caught off a shark on the Western flats. He also worked out a winning formula for St. Francois triggers and didn’t let up the whole week, getting at least one every day. Great guiding, Reece.

Stay tuned for next week’s report.

    Tight lines,
