ALPHONSE ISLAND FISHING NEWS | 23 FEBRUARY – 3 MARCH 2023
At peak neaps, expectations are always high on the trigger front, but it wasn’t only the triggers that turned up this week. The GT fishing was exceptional once again and the milks were up feeding on the scum lines surrounding the atolls in their droves.
A beautiful permit of 64 cm also came to the net after a long, nerve-wracking fight. The bone fishing took a back seat this week as the atoll came alive with GTs and triggers. As always, the neaps produced a few good triggers with a lot of the bigger fish hanging around on the coral fingers and in the surf line. The gentle current allows them to stay put with little effort, point their tails skywards and thrash violently. It gets the excitement levels up for sure. The surf zone on both the East and West of St. Francois was literally littered with sizeable tailing triggers on the pushing tides, and the windows for fishing them were ample. The hardest part was approaching the target fish without spooking some of the other unsighted critters. Trigger paradise.
The GTs hung around in the lagoon and with the water levels consistently low and good light on our side, we were able to target bow-waking fish on the fingers all day long. As a result, a total of 17 fish were landed and a bunch more were lost to the coral.
By far the fish of the week was a 64 cm permit landed by Bo. A phenomenal fish to say the least. Bo is no stranger to the flats of Alphonse and knows all too well how special this fish is. Bo and Matt, her guide, had been walking the Tam Tam Flat for permit all morning, but as usual, the permit were uncooperative for the most part. On the turn back to the boat, this permit surprised them and Bo laid a shot in haste. The fly was quickly inhaled, and the game was on. Anyone who has caught a permit knows how tricky they can be and the rush one gets when the fish eats. When that hook sticks, your heart jumps straight to your throat. You only relax once that fish is in the net. Well done to Bo and Matt on this special fish.
Stay tuned for next week’s report.
