COSMOLEDO ATOLL FLY FISHING REPORT (9 – 16 Mar 2023)

    17 March 2023

    COSMOLEDO FISHING NEWS | 9 – 16 MARCH 2023

The week on Cosmoledo was definitely one of our better neap tide weeks of the season, producing a great number of giant trevally. The week started off three days after the full moon and we were seeing really good tidal movement over the entire atoll.

The first three days of the week were spent doing surf walks on edge of the atoll. We started off on the lower end and slowly worked our way up to the higher points of the atoll as the week progressed. Our biggest tide for the week was one day before we started the week, which meant that the water levels in the surf were still getting extremely low and pushing extremely fast, exactly what you want when targeting geets. A good number of geets were caught in the surf and everyone was enjoying being out of the boat for a bit.

For many of the anglers, the GTs caught were a first, making it all the more special! We also had a great few days of trigger fishing with lots of triggers around and feeding eagerly.

Cosmo isn’t exactly known for large numbers of bonefish, but the bones that are around on this atoll are of an exceptional average size making each one very special. The group spent time searching for bones and were able to tuck into them, setting some personal bests for a couple of anglers.

Michael and Phillip Molenaar had an exceptional day in the surf on the second day working the western edge of the atoll. In the morning they were able to land six giant trevally between themselves before 9:30 AM. As their day progressed, Michael was able to finally trick one of the moustache triggerfish into eating his snake skin flexo crab. After the guide had dived it out of a coral head, Michael had brought his first moustache triggerfish to hand! Philip managed to catch himself his first Indo-Pacific permit and his first moustache triggerfish in one day. Congratulations to Michael and Philip, ending off the day with seven GTs, two moustache triggers and a permit is no small feat!

The week ended on a neap tide however good numbers of fish were seen inside the lagoon and everyone still managed to catch a few fish as the tides swung away from the springs, ending the week off on a good note.

Stay tuned for the next report from Cosmo!

    Tight lines,
