COSMOLEDO ATOLL FLY FISHING REPORT (23 – 30 Mar 2023)

    31 March 2023

    COSMOLEDO FISHING NEWS | 23 – 30 MARCH 2023

The week started off with the tail end of a new moon spring tide just starting to fade out into the neap tides which were seen right at the end of the week. The weather had definitely played its part, providing good light conditions throughout the entire week accompanied by almost no wind for most of the days spent out fishing.

On the first couple of days of the week, the majority of the boats spent their days in the surf looking for triggerfish and giant trevally. The geets were seen on rays and sharks throughout the week on the flats and within the surf zone.

An equal number of giant trevally were taken from the surf and the lagoon, the lagoon fish were mostly off of rays and in the surf most the fish were free-swimming. Neither area showed a significant difference in fish numbers. Boats spread out well and covered the majority of the atoll throughout the week, ensuring no stone was left unturned.

Emily Graham managed to catch her first four giant trevally during the week and a beautiful moustache triggerfish to top it all off! Congratulations to Emily on an amazing result!

Josef Kuncl had all of the luck on his side and managed to catch two Flats Slams in two consecutive days. On the fourth day, Josef caught himself a Flats Slam consisting of a giant trevally, a yellowmargin triggerfish and a bonefish, all caught in the southwestern region of the atoll. On the fifth day, Josef fished really well and was able to bag himself another Slam including the elusive Indo-pacific permit, a giant trevally and a bonefish, predominantly around Wizard Island and South West Island. A massive congratulations to Josef on an outstanding achievement!

Timothy Rogers got lucky with the triggerfish on his trip and was able to land himself a beautiful moustache triggerfish in the surf. The trigger followed the orange flexo crab right up to the rod tip before eventually getting hooked and didn’t give up easily as he wrapped Tim up in a coral head before landing the fish. A thrilling experience of trigger fishing in the surf. Tim was then able to catch a yellowmargin triggerfish in the lagoon, in an area known as the Bad Lands due to its many coral heads and finger flats. Triggerfish are seen tailing on the turtle grass finger flats on the low tides which creates the perfect opportunity to target them on the boat while poling. Congratulations to Tim on his great trigger fishing.

11 of Cosmoledo’s big bonefish were also accounted for during the week and spread out pretty easily amongst the guys. A very special fish indeed for a location such as this.

A huge thank you to everybody for finding the time and effort to come out here and spend a week with the team here on Cosmoledo! We look forward to having you all back here soon to enjoy another Seychelles fishing experience.

Stay tuned for the next report from Cosmo!

    Tight lines,
