FARQUHAR ATOLL FLY FISHING REPORT |  12 MAR – 19 MAR

Day one was a good start to the week with many boxes being ticked and a diverse array of species being targeted. Michael and Caio both landed their first bonefish, while Michael also managed to land his first GT. TJ went big on the first day and landed a trophy bonefish of 60 cm and to top it off he also caught a 95 cm GT in the deep coral ridges of the southern side of the atoll, which has become known for big GTs. Jeff C decided to dedicate his day to triggers of all different shapes and sizes with guide Bailey, targeting the usual suspects as well as some deep water dwelling triggers that are not usually caught. He started off by ticking off both the moustache and yellow margin triggers on the flats, the margin was a trophy at 53 cm. He then went offshore and managed to catch a bridled triggerfish and his main target for the day, the vampire triggerfish, being the first on fly for the season.

The good fishing kept momentum going into day two with focus shifting heavily onto triggerfish given the low GT numbers. Despite this, TJ landed another GT to keep the numbers going up. Jeff S joined the yellowmargin triggerfish club, landing a trophy 53 cm of his own with guide Gerry. Jeff C once again gave triggers most of his attention and his efforts paid off. He and Steve R joined up for the day with guide Cullan. Jeff opened his tally for the day with a unit of a moustache triggerfish at 54 cm. Later in the day, Cullan spotted a decent moustache triggerfish and Steve had a go. The trigger immediately pinned the fly down and Steve set well and was into his trigger fight. Before Cullan could net Steve’s trigger, Jeff spotted a larger yellowmargin trigger and sent out a cast. His fish also immediately pinned the fly and suddenly the men were doubled up on triggers. Both triggers were landed in the same net together and Jeff’s trigger was his second trophy for the day at 52 cm. Steve G also managed to land a trophy bonefish on his second day, measuring in at 63 cm.

On day three the GT fishing picked up a fair bit with David, Fred, TJ and Steve R all catching a GT each. Steve G backed up his trophy bonefish from the day before with a solid yellowmargin triggerfish. Day four proved to be fruitful as Fred landed a trophy bonefish of 63 cm. Steve R walked the surf with guide Chase in the south in search of triggers and bumpies. After a short while in the surf, Steve managed to send a good cast into a large shoal of bumpies. After a few long and slow strips he came tight on the fish and immediately sent Chase into a foot race to land the fish. After some reel screaming and coral dodging, the fish was landed, making it the first bumpy for the week. On day five TJ changed his tune and instead of the usual GT antics, he landed himself his first ever moustache trigger in the surf, on foot, the best way possible. Jeff S and Steve R also both landed a GT each on their final day before heading over to Providence.
