FARQUHAR ATOLL FLY FISHING REPORT | 23 APR – 30 APR
Four guests from South Africa and America had the rare opportunity to experience Farquhar Atoll all to themselves for a full week of fishing. After arriving, the group headed out for a little more than a half-day session—and were immediately into some decent fish on the flats. Father and son duo, Mark and Stewart, each landed a GT to kick the week off in style. The following day (officially day one), Stewart backed it up with another solid GT.
Day two saw the duo continue their hot streak. Stewart added two more GTs to his tally, one of them an impressive 90 cm fish caught right off the beach in the shore break. Mark wasn’t far behind—landing a sizeable barracuda measuring 123 cm.
Day three brought more success for the South African team, with both Mark and Stewart landing another GT each. On Day four, the fishing picked up even more. Jake, who had been chasing his first GT all week, finally connected. After a few close calls and missed opportunities, he came tight on a decent fish and did everything right to keep it pinned. Landing his first GT—and getting the monkey off his back—seemed to ease his mind, and his confidence grew for the rest of the trip. Meanwhile, Mark and Stewart weren’t slowing down. They added another four GTs to the boat that day, including new personal bests: Mark with a 91 cm GT, and Stewart with a 94 cm brute.
Day five brought a bit more of the variety Farquhar is known for. Mark landed yet another GT, while Stewart decided to mix things up and caught a trophy 51 cm moustache triggerfish—a prized catch on the flats.Day six, the final day, delivered big on fish numbers—but not so much on weather. Strong winds, rain, and minimal light on the flats made for tough conditions, but the fish didn’t seem to care. Stewart landed two more GTs, while Mark raised the bar once again with a new personal best GT measuring 93 cm.
Jake made the most of the final day. Early on, he hooked into a powerful, highly sought-after fish. After having a good chunk of backing torn from his spool—and with a few sharks in the area—he tightened up and managed to stop the prehistoric-looking brute. The result, a 101 cm bumpy, his first ever and the only one landed that week. He followed it up with another GT, then added a solid bonefish to round out the day—completing a flats slam on the final day of fishing!
