FARQUHAR ATOLL FLY FISHING REPORT | 09 APR – 16 APR
For week 19 a group of eight Icelandic friends met up for a saltwater trip of a lifetime. For most of the group it was their first saltwater fly experience, and they truly made the most of every moment.
On day one most of the team went out in search of their first bonefish. Orn, David and Sigi A all landed their first ever bonefish right off the bat. A few bonus catches also came out with Sigi A landing the first GT for the week and Leif landing a golden trevally out of a schoal that guide Yousuf estimated at being near a 100 fish or so. Day two, Sigi V joined in on the bonefish action, landing his first ever. Leif continued on his hot streak and went out with guide Cullan for a short surf walk in search of GTs and triggers. Despite not yet ticking the GT box, Leif managed to land a trophy size moustache triggerfish at 53 cm! The trigger broke the leader right at the net and Cullan still managed to scoop it up just in time.
Day three was a tad quiet with only Sigi V landing a GT for the group. The slow fishing took a turn on day four however, with many great catches being made. David managed to tick off his first ever moustache triggerfish, while Ingo also joined the trigger train, but with a trophy yellow margin triggerfish measuring 51 cm! Stefan went out in search of bumpies and on the first move of the morning managed to put out a great cast into a large group of them. Leaving the fly to sit and only stripping to keep contact with the fly, Stefan went tight and with guide Casey sprinting out after the fish it was in no time before he had his first bumpy in hand. The angler of the day was Leif, who teamed up with guide Chad. While on a long surf walk Leif managed to land not one but two moustache triggers as well as a GT. He later landed a bonefish on the inside of the lagoon to complete his flats slam.
On day five the fishing slowed down a bit again, but Farquhar is known for trophy fish and diversity and Sigi A proved that with his trophy 57 cm moustache triggerfish in the surf with guide Chase. Day six and the final day of fishing saw two anglers walk away with huge smiles on their faces. Stefan finally landed his first GT on fly on the last day and a decent one at that measuring 86 cm. Orn had been trying for a bumpy for most of the week and on the final day his persistence paid off. Teamed up with guide Casey, he managed to hook one among some treacherous rocks and corals. The fish stitched his fly line and backing through several rocks, forcing Casey to once again sprint after the fish and unstitch the snagged line. After some terrifying moments for Orn, the fish stopped running and tried to hide between some rocks in the bottom. Casey took the opportunity and netted the fish before it could go on another reel heating run.
