Big fish only! With the transition into neaps, everyone knew the kingies would be tougher to find on the sand, meaning more time spent in the lagoon and on the coral fingers. The triggers seemed spookier than usual if that is even possible, but some of the big geets came out to play. The visibility was some of the best it has been all season, with a gentle breeze and sunshine every day.
There was huge GT excitement this week. With the south-easterly gaining consistency, the eastern side of the atoll is cleaning up nicely. Generally, these conditions mean bigger GTs start to show face, and this week was no different. A third of the fish caught were over 85 cm, and two geets broke the 100 cm mark. The numbers were also there, making it an exceptional GT week. Very well fished to Nick, who landed himself a Super Slam, including a bonefish, trigger, permit and the icing on the cake, a 100 cm GT.
There were some big bones in the early mornings. Big singles were dropped off the flat in the deeper, cooler water for prolonged periods, and they were hungry for that. Philip pulled three trophy fish over 60 cm in one morning, while his wife, Jane, managed a 60 cm. Great fishing.
There were a few milkfish, permits, and the odd trigger caught. Although, as mentioned, the triggerfish were tough. Towards the end of the week, the anglers mainly landed fish in the surf on gentle pushes.
