ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT | 17 MAY – 24 MAY
The week started off with great weather with the odd cloud here and there, the tides in their neap phase and a group of six anglers ready to make the most of the opportunity to fish.
Day One was an exciting one, as a little friendly competition between the anglers yielded some phenomenal results. Francois landed his first bonefish to get the day started and the arm moving, and followed it up shortly after with a solid 53 cm moustache triggerfish to set the tone for the rest of the group. Not to be outdone, Ruan managed to bring to hand an equally beautiful 49 cm triggerfish. Hearing the news of the fish being tamed around him, Adam fished hard and landed a 61 cm bonefish, followed swiftly by a 44 cm permit.
Day Two came around with the winds bringing a fair amount of rain—making sight fishing difficult, but not impossible. Not wanting to throw in the towel just yet, the anglers and guides headed out to give it their all. Teamed up with Yousuf, Ruan landed a milkfish on the outside, further fuelling the fish fever.
Day three, and the race was on. It started off with Ruan landing a 77 cm GT, lighting the proverbial fire under everyone’s feet. Jake, ever hopeful and paired with Reece, managed to bring a GT to hand first thing in the morning. After chasing triggers the rest of the morning, hope seemed lost—but after regrouping at flats lunch and getting refuelled with some food and Seybrews, he headed out and landed his first moustache trigger. The race was back on, and they managed to find a bonefish to close out the slam. Amidst all the chaos and shouting, Francois—paired with Yousuf—was quietly taming fish and staying under the radar. He landed an 83 cm GT, a moustache trigger, and a bonefish to complete his own slam.
With morale at an all-time high among both guides and guests, Day Four saw Adam, paired with Yousuf, land a beautiful milkfish on the outside. Francois, fishing around Alphonse with Luke, had a few shots at GTs—none of which connected—but managed to land a 60 cm island trevally.
Day five rolled in with beautiful weather and the tides slowly shifting toward spring movements. There was an air of excitement among the guides, as they knew big fish were going to push up onto the flats. Keen to get into the action, Francois headed out with Yousuf and landed a beautiful 70 cm milkfish. Angler of the day went to Jake, who landed two stunning GTs of 86 and 72 cm, respectively.
Day six was a special one—the best weather of the week combined with an amazing tide meant the team knew it would be epic. Subbing himself in, Kyle opted to take Rhuan out for the day. Adam, paired with Luke, managed a staggering 21 bonefish to finish his week in style. Jake, teamed up with Yousuf, added a milkfish to his tally. But the standout fish of the day was Rhuan’s GT. Fishing on the east with Kyle and armed with some of the best GT flies in the industry, they managed to land a spectacular 105 cm GT—ending his week with a bang.
Overall, many GTs were seen, though most seemed a bit wary of the flies and their surroundings. That said, many beautiful fish were caught, and for that we are grateful. We now await next week to see what the flats will deliver.
