ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT | 03 MAY – 10 MAY

We had a total of six guests joining us on the flats throughout the week, with a few of them choosing to fish only on select days. Despite the varied schedules, each of our anglers had an unforgettable experience, enjoying encounters with some of the special species. The conditions for the week were outstanding, with a steady moderate south-easterly breeze blowing gently throughout the days. The visibility was truly epic, allowing for clear spotting of fish and making the overall fishing experience both productive and enjoyable.

Tide-wise, we experienced a very pleasant transition from neap tides into spring tides over the course of the week. This shift offered us plenty of flexibility and opened up a wide range of opportunities throughout each day on the flats.

All of our anglers had the chance to dive into some fantastic bonefish action, especially during the mornings dropping tides. A number of solid fish were landed, with the biggest bonefish of the week measuring an impressive 65 cm fork length. While the milkfish were present in the area, their numbers weren’t high, which made targeting them a bit of a challenge. Nevertheless, Theodore and his mother Anastasia showed great determination and persistence. Their efforts were rewarded in spectacular fashion as both managed to land a pair of massive milkfish in the lagoon — a truly memorable achievement for both anglers.

Later in the week, Tyler also managed to hook into a smaller milkfish in the Tam Tam channel. He rounded out his session with a nicely sized yellow margin triggerfish and a bonefish, successfully completing a classic flats slam — an exciting highlight for any angler.

The GTs (giant trevally) were definitely around and feeding aggressively, and several fine specimens were brought to the net. The standout GT catch of the week came once again from Theodor, who landed a beast of a fish measuring a hefty 97 cm. It was an absolutely epic fish and certainly a trip-defining moment for him. Over the course of the week, he continued to build on his success, rounding up a strong collection of GTs.

But Theodor’s achievements didn’t stop there. He also managed to land two beautifully sized moustache triggerfish — always a thrill on the flats — and topped it all off with one of the most prized catches in the world of saltwater fly fishing: a stunning 44 cm indo-pacific permit caught along the scenic beach of St. Francois. For many saltwater fly anglers, that’s the pinnacle of the sport.
