    ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT | 05 APR – 12 APR 2025

ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT | 05 APR – 12 APR

With 12 anglers fishing St Francois Atoll this week anticipation levels were rising  and we knew we were strapped in for a great week of fishing. This week the weather consisted of hot sun accompanied by little to no wind. It was a challenging week for our anglers but they kept positive attitudes and made the most of the week.

The giant trevally weren’t spotted as often this week on the pushing neap tides making it more challenging than usual to catch one of these incredible fish, fortunately some of our anglers persisted and came out successful. Doug Eberhaunt remained patient and he was rewarded with two beautiful GTs. Tyler Mercer joined us later on in the week after fishing on Cosmoledo and showed off all he had learnt catching two geets on his first day.

Catching your first GT can be very daunting, after hearing all the stories about their unbelievable strength, after many hours of trying it’s an unforgettable memory to finally get your hands on one. Janine and Caleb Hunt were up for the challenge and adequately prepared themselves for what was to come. They both successfully landed their very first GTs out on the flats of St Francois. Congratulations to all for managing to tackle such a strong and powerful fish.

We had quite an experienced permit angler join us for a couple days here on Alphonse. He has been travelling the Seychelles targeting only permit for a while now and it seems he has a way with them. Ilya Scherbovich caught two beautiful permit during his short stop over on Alphonse, one coming in at 58 cm. Following the permit trend, Alistair Grant decided he would attempt to go after a permit and successfully landed a beautiful permit, followed by a moustache triggerfish and ending with a lovely bonefish, earning Alistair a Flats Slam.

There was a simmering buzz on the flats from the triggerfish this week and after many attempts, bite offs, break offs and trigger spooks, a few of our anglers managed to land this stunning species. Triggers are known for sometimes being picky when it comes to taking a fly so almost everything has to go perfectly to land one of these fish. Practicing patience out on the flats Freidrich, Kate Freeman and Janine all managed to land a moustache triggerfish each. The milk fishing on Alphonse and St Francois is always filled with excitement but getting your hands on one of these fish is not always an easy feat. You have to be in the right place at the right time, they have to be feeding and they can fight for a long time. Bobby Hunt rose to the challenge and landed his first milkfish ever.

Yet again the bonefish didn’t let us down. The bone fishing on Alphonse and St Francois is some of the best in the world and many anglers this week proved that. The Rumble family; Gary, Katy, Harris and Eva all went out for a half day on the water and in that short time they all managed their first bones. The brothers trio Christian, Caleb and Bobby Hunt all caught their first bonefish and then Bobby went on to catch 20 bones in just one day. Eleanor and Tamara Grant had a fantastic day on the water and not only caught their first bones but Eleanor caught caught 61 cm and a 63 cm bones as well. Tamara successfully caught 20 in just one day. The star bonefish of the week was an impressive 65 cm caught by Kate Freeman.

We thoroughly enjoyed getting to know all of the anglers this passing week and we hope to see you again soon.
