ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT | 01 MAR – 08 MAR
As March dawned this week it brought along with it some of the best GT fishing Alphonse island has seen with some unbelievable fishing results. This week was heaving with GTs among other species as the spring tides and serene weather conditions served as a vessel to bring the flats to life with an incredible abundance of species, making this week truly unforgettable.
The GTs were undoubtedly the stars of the show this week with evident hunger in their eyes, an impressive number of 40 GTs were caught. With 12 anglers on the water fishing St Francois and Alphonse, the stakes were high as the fishing seemingly proceeded to improve by the hour. After a riveting fight against a true king of the flats, Chris Daughters was fortunate enough to land a colossal 123 cm GT, really the fish of a lifetime, but on the same day Chris decided one geet was not enough and proceeded to land another seven giant trevally which seemingly brought magic to the flats for the duration of the week. Chris added another 103 cm giant and a further six GTs to his tally by the end of the week. Congratulations on some incredible results Chris. Sticking to the GT trend for the week, Rob Gilchrist was successful in landing six GTs in just the space of one afternoon with the largest one coming in at a proud 80 cm, what an incredible day out on the water Rob, huge congrats! The size of GTs for the week was astounding with an incredible statistic of four GTs being over a metre long for the week, a hearty well done to Doug Hoff and Greg Moore for managing to tackle these monstrous sizes and successfully landing such remarkable fish of 116 cm and 105 cm respectively!
Although the highlight of the week was evidently the astonishing action from the giant trevally, the fire didn’t just stop there with some buzzing activity from the cheeky triggers. Shauna Daughters had an incredible day out on the water and gracefully managed an impressive Alphonse SLAM, starting off with a stunning bonefish, followed by a tremendous 94 cm geet, caught off a nurse shark, and ending off her indelible day with a dazzling 46 cm yellow margin triggerfish. Our biggest trigger of the week was a bulky 50 cm yellow margin, managed by James Carter. Derek Johnson also successfully managed to get his hands on two beautiful triggers, a 46 cm yellow margin trigger and a 42 cm moustache trigger. Congratulations to all of you for taming these tricky triggers.
The ever-present bonefish were an absolute treat this week, gifting the anglers with some of their bigger members, leaving the bone fishing for the week quite remarkable. The largest bonefish of the week was an incredibly colossal 71 cm, caught by a first time angler, Taylor Wade, this achievement was a testament to her patience and rapid improvement over the course of the week, a big congrats Taylor! Alan Degenault and Mike Coglin also both achieved excellence in landing these shifty fish and both managed tremendous sizes of 66 cm and 61 cm respectively.
This week was absolutely remarkable and will not soon be forgotten, the flats were on fire and especially the geets came alive in the afternoons as the push started on the spring tides. There was an abundance of incredible results from the fishery this week with all the anglers leaving with some memorable achievements. A huge congratulations to Doug Hoff on successfully landing a further three geets in addition to his massive 116 cm, Jeff Smith on his two GT victory and Cameron Derbershire on an incredible five giant trevally over the seven days of absolute magic out on the water. Derek Johnson got his hands on his first ever GT of 73 cm and followed it up a few moments later with a lovely 81 cm fish. James Carter finished the week with two GTs in addition to his trigger, some great all-round angling James! This week of magic is a true testament to the rare and natural beauty of Alphonse island with a huge abundance of species and achievements present throughout the week. With unique experiences and profound memories made, we are so privileged to have another amazing week on the atoll with some world-class fishing. Stay tuned for next week’s report!
