ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT | 19 APR – 26 APR

We were gifted with a week that was nothing short of spectacular. With clear skies, gleaming sunshine, glistening waters, neap tides, and 12 keen anglers, we were in for some truly world-class fishing. The neap tides contributed to an increased buzz from the triggers, more aggression from the geets, and even a rise in some of our rarer species. Every angler showed great grit and determination, and with such high ambition all around, the week turned out to be a huge success.

Joining us this week, Tom Leslie delivered excellence on the water every single day and was, without a doubt, the angler of the week. On his first day, Tom landed a beautiful 90 cm GT. On day two, he followed it up with a lovely 75 cm GT. On his third day, he switched focus to triggers and landed a moustache trigger along with three yellowmargin triggers.

As the week progressed, Tom continued his streak. On day four, he landed four yellowmargin triggers—the largest measuring an impressive 51 cm. Then, on day five at St. Francois Atoll, Tom achieved something only four anglers before him had ever done: a golden grand slam. He landed a bonefish, a giant trevally, a moustache triggerfish, a milkfish, and, finally, a permit—the highest award of achievement here on Alphonse Island. A truly remarkable result. Tom closed out his week in spectacular fashion by landing a massive 109 cm GT on his final day. His fishing ability, combined with relentless ambition, is a testament to what Alphonse Fishery can offer when hard work and dedication meet opportunity. Congratulations on the week of a lifetime, Tom!

Thanks to the neap tides and slight breezes, the trigger fishing this week was ideal. These conditions allowed the triggers more time to feed and made them less spooky throughout the day. Pieter Erasmus successfully landed his first triggerfish—a dazzling 50 cm yellow margin. Jean Pierre also joined the trigger club with a lovely 52 cm yellow margin, marking his first as well.

Tristan and Chris Erasmus spent 10 days fishing with us and landed some fantastic fish. One standout day saw Tristan land two solid GTs, two impressive yellow margin triggers, and a couple of bonefish—earning him a double grand flats slam! Chris also had a stellar day, landing two GTs of 75 cm and 96 cm respectively. He completed a grand slam himself, catching a bonefish, followed by a moustache triggerfish, and finishing with a beautiful—and notoriously difficult—permit. Jean Pierre had another standout moment by landing two milkfish in one morning, an achievement that’s never easy and always impressive.

This week was undeniably special for all our anglers, full of firsts and personal bests on the water. The flats were alive, and each angler made the most of every opportunity the fishery had to offer. Congratulations to all 12 anglers for displaying such brilliance and achieving truly outstanding results throughout the week!
