ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT | 12 APR – 19 APR
As Easter Sunday dawns, we take a moment to reflect on an outstanding week shared with twelve incredibly eager anglers. The week began with spring tides that transitioned seamlessly into neaps—creating ideal conditions for a phenomenal week of fishing across both Alphonse and St. Francois atolls.
The giant trevally were especially active, and the flats were buzzing with energy from this powerful species. Tyler Mercer joined us this week and had a truly unforgettable experience, landing several fish of a lifetime. After six days of hard fishing on the St. Francois atoll, Tyler finished with an impressive total of seven GTs. He kicked off the week with a personal best of 73 cm, but quickly topped that with a 90 cm fish on day two—only to go even bigger, landing a massive 115 cm giant trevally, an absolute beast of the flats.
After conquering the geets, Tyler shifted his focus to more tactical species, targeting the notoriously tricky triggerfish. In one impressive morning, he landed both a moustache triggerfish and a fantastic 53 cm yellowmargin. Tyler’s week was a testament to the rewards of dedication and hard work—congratulations on a world-class performance!
The GT fever spread among all our anglers, and with persistence and plenty of casts, many were rewarded. Hugh Frater and Chris Erasmus each landed a beautiful geet on their very first day. Chris continued his hot streak throughout the week, finishing with five more GTs, the largest coming in at an impressive 97 cm. Tristan Blewett added to the tally with two standout catches at 80 cm and 91 cm on the St. Francois flats. Frequent visitor—and member of the extended Blue Safari family—Chantal Chone landed a lovely 69 cm geet. Well done to all the GT anglers for a memorable week of big fish!
Throughout the week, we also encountered many tailing triggerfish. These clever and elusive fish are always a challenge, but a few determined anglers managed to outwit them. Anthea Erasmus landed a 44 cm moustache triggerfish, while Digby Flower brought in a 43 cm moustache trigger of his own—great work on these prized catches!
Adding even more excitement to the week, a few milkfish made a welcome appearance in the Milky Way Channel. Rising to the occasion, Jean Louis Lacombe and Chris Erasmus both landed impressive milkfish—a feat that takes skill, timing, and patience. It was a truly fantastic week, full of unforgettable moments and hard-earned victories. Congratulations to all our anglers for making the most of everything our fishery has to offer. It was a pleasure to share in your success.
