ALPHONSE ISLAND FLY FISHING REPORT | 22 MAR – 29 MAR

Alphonse island once again lived up to its stellar reputation as a bucket list destination for keen anglers. As the tides transitioned from neaps to springs nearing the weekend, the flats were bustling with fish and opportunities. The weather this week was not exactly flawless and we did have the odd rainstorm but that did not dampen any ambition when it came to catching some once in a lifetime fish and we had a week filled of successes and triumphs out on the water with our 12 anglers for the week.

The very talented angler Corey Ho spent his birthday week fishing our waters and the fishery evidently gifted him profusely with an absolutely biblical week. Corey started off his week with a tough fight against a GT followed by a hat trick of three moustache triggers all in the same morning! Still Corey went out the following day and managed a flats slam consisting of a 51 cm yellow margin triggerfish, a 42 cm permit and a bonefish. Corey then ended his week off with a perfect day of fishing, catching a 95 cm milkfish, another bonefish and the star of the week…a 106 cm giant trevally, as well as another 76 cm GT. Corey’s passion and dedication this week was a testament to the natural beauty of the fishery and the unending abundance of opportunities in the waters, a huge congrats Corey!

With fire in their eyes and hunger in their bellies the daunting giant trevally took charge on the flats this week and after many long and strenuous fights against these monstrous fish, many of our anglers were able to achieve excellence in landing this incredibly difficult species. Mark Gage landed a whopping five giant trevallys during his week, the largest of the bunch coming in at a proud 90 cm, an awesome week of fishing Mark, well done! Malte Siewart and Mikael Eriksson are a well-travelled fly fishing duo that were both successful in landing geets. Jamie Boyle also took to the flats and found himself tussling with a tricky 70 cm GT, managing to land it successfully. David Fleig was triumphant in landing two promising geets as well as Mike Maceroli who went for the double on the geet side of things along with John Graham who also landed two beautiful GTs! Some hearty congratulations to all anglers who demonstrated some truly remarkable fishing and skill throughout the week.

There was a constant buzz from the triggerfish this week out on the flats and whilst they are evidently not an easy victory some anglers came away victorious. Mark Gage managed a 40 cm yellow margin triggerfish, Steve Slovick caught a lovely yellow margin.  David Koo came to Alphonse with no previous triggerfish encounters and after some persistence he landed his first ever yellow margin triggerfish of 46 cm. Bronson Fleig also wrestled with these tricky fish and successfully landed a beautiful 45 cm moustache triggerfish. Well done to everyone who had the patience and skill needed to be able to grab this rare and incredibly tactical species of fish.

As always, the bonefish were kind to the anglers and remained attainable in giving all a fun fight and a rewarding feeling. Christopher Hall travelled to Alphonse in hopes of catching his first bonefish but after a while he realised he had a knack for it and impressively managed to land over 20 bonefish in just one day. Debbie Ho and Stacey Fleig caught their first bonefish here on Alphonse which is always a magical victory. Tied up for the biggest bonefish of the week Bronson Fleig and Maddie Koo each landed a sizey 62 cm bonefish.

Congratulations to everyone who fished and landed such a wonderful variety of sizes and species throughout the week. We are eternally grateful to have been a part of your unforgettable fishing experience here on Alphonse island, a week filled with laughter, bonding and lifelong memory making, we hope to see you back here soon.
