ASTOVE ATOLL FLY FISHING REPORT | 17 MAR – 24 MAR 2025
Week eight began with some unpredictable weather, as squalls of rain and gusty winds rolled through every hour or so. The week started with the spring tides, gradually transitioning into the gentler Neap tides as the days unfolded.
This week, we had the pleasure of hosting two enthusiastic angling guests, Santiago and Magdalena, a newlywed couple eager to make the most of their time on the water. They were determined to get the rod bent on anything that swam. On their first day, they ventured out with Enrico, walking the lagoon. It didn’t take long before they were reeling in fish, landing an impressive 40 bonefish on their very first outing. It was the perfect way to shake off any rust and get into the rhythm of the fishing. On day two, they returned to the lagoon, this time with Sean as their guide, focused on chasing the prized Permit. After an exciting day spent walking through the beautiful waters of Astove, they wrapped up the day with one Permit and ten bonefish between the two of them. It was another solid day, and their pursuit of the perfect catch continued with energy and enthusiasm.
Days three and four brought a new challenge, as the couple shifted their focus to the mighty Giant Trevally (GT). The fish were feeding offshore, and while this made the hunt more difficult, Santiago and Magdalena remained undeterred. Over the two days, they landed 8 more bonefish and added another Permit to their count, staying positive and focused on the prize. As the week went on, the hunt for GTs continued both on the flats and offshore. While the offshore fish proved elusive, the couple’s perseverance and determination never wavered. They stayed upbeat, with each day offering new encounters as fish were raised and teased offshore. Though the GTs were slow to bite, their behavior seemed to suggest they were well-fed from the abundant supply of high-protein crab meat in the waters.
While week eight presented its challenges, Santiago and Magdalena’s positive attitude and unwavering determination were truly impressive. The anglers embraced every opportunity, trusting the guides to explore different strategies in their search for the perfect fish. Although the GTs remained out of reach, the couple’s spirit and excitement for the fishing adventure remained high, making it a week filled with determination and a sense of accomplishment. The search for the ideal catch continued with optimism, and each day brought a renewed sense of excitement for the next cast.
