FARQUHAR ATOLL FLY FISHING REPORT | 03 – 10 APR 2024
From day one on Farquhar this week, we saw 10 anglers trying their luck on the diverse Farquhar waters.
Despite adverse weather conditions, Alex still managed to land a 63 cm bonefish, regarded as a trophy.
The second day was much more productive as the anglers racked up a good few catches. Frederich kicked off his week with two GTs right out of the gate. Digby managed to land his first one of the week as well. On the dredging mission offshore, former guide Ryan managed to land a saddleback grouper, which is one of the rare fish we encounter on Farquhar. Dennis managed a solid 56 cm moustache triggerfish while throwing the brush fly for GTs. The man of the day was Alexey, who landed two GTs. While fishing the deep coral ridges, head guide Gerry spotted a large fish riding high and seemingly in a good mood. With guidance from Gerry, Alexey laid out a beautiful cast and managed to convince the giant fish to lunge for a quick meal. With a bit of a tussle and some coral dodging, the fish landed and measured a spectacular 111 cm.
The following day, Digby was at it again, landing another GT. The angler of the day this time around was Ken, who managed to land two GTs, the biggest being 92 cm, beating his personal best, which was set on Farquhar several years prior.
Ken and Digby were at it again on day four, this time Digby with another GT and Ken once again beating his personal best. A large group of GTs was spotted swimming across a white sand pothole with a nurse shark. Ken wasted no time casting, and a few strips later, the 97 cm GT lunged for the fly with violent intent. Ken managed to land the fish in no time!
On day five, Frederich came back to the form he had shown previously in the week. He landed another geet and a rare red saddleback grouper while dredging offshore, the first saddleback in several seasons. Sam also scored his first-ever GT with only one day to spare.
The final day saw Ken landing a fish that is rarely caught off the skiffs on Farquhar – a black jack trevally. Sam also had a magnificent day, catching a GT and moustache to end off the week with us.
