PROVIDENCE ATOLL FLY FISHING REPORT | 19 JAN – 26 JAN 2025
It was another fantastic week onboard Quo Vadis, where six anglers joined us for an unforgettable fishing adventure. This week, we had Stuart Bird, Alan Olivier, Rod Thorington, Clay Simpson, Mark Bielovich, and Volkmar Herltriegel, each bringing their own energy and enthusiasm to the flats. The week turned out to be one filled with big fish, great company, and plenty of action.
It was truly a week of big GTs. Volkmar, Clay, and Rod each managed to land fish well over the one-meter mark, marking some memorable moments for all involved. Unfortunately, not every fish made it to hand, with a few slips and near-misses for some of the other anglers, but that’s part of the game.
While Alan and Stuart did lose their big GTs, they still managed to land some solid fish above the 90 cm range, which was a great result. More importantly, both anglers ticked off some major boxes with their first-ever bumphead parrotfish, which was a huge achievement for both of them. Alan, not to be outdone, added two great triggerfish to his tally, and went on to achieve the coveted Flats Slam. He landed a GT, a triggerfish, and a bonefish in a single day—an impressive accomplishment that made his week even more exciting.
Volkmar had a stellar week, landing several decent-sized GTs, with his biggest catch being an absolute beast measuring in at 117 cm. That fish alone would have made for an incredible week, but Volkmar didn’t stop there. He also added three impressive triggerfish to his scorecard, showing his versatility on the flats and proving why he was one of the top anglers for the week.
Skiff partners Rod and Clay had a remarkable week together. Clay got off to a fantastic start by landing his first-ever GT, a monstrous 116 cm, on the very first cast he made. It was a sign of things to come as he continued to land several more GTs throughout the week. But Clay’s real focus on the final day was to land a bumphead parrotfish and a triggerfish—two species that had eluded him so far. Not only did he achieve that feat before noon, but he also went on to land two triggerfish on the final day, finishing the week on high.
Rod, also had an incredible week. He landed a giant 114 cm GT along with several other GTs throughout the week. He didn’t stop there, he also added a few triggerfish to his tally, completing a well-rounded set of catches. Both Rod and Clay managed to land the only two milkfish of the week, a rare and exciting catch that added to the excitement of the trip.
We saw some truly terrific catches across the board, and everyone left with great memories and new stories to tell. It’s always a pleasure to share these experiences with such a dedicated group of anglers, and we want to thank all of you for an unforgettable week. We hope to see you all back on the flats soon.
