Indo-Pacific Permit on Fly

The holy grail of flats fly fishing, Golden-yellow fins with big, black eyes are the most striking features of an Indo-Pacific permit. Apart from that, they are well camouflaged on the backdrop of white sand, turtle grass, or coral flats. Their body is a silver, almost mirror-like colour that reflects their habitat, making them nearly invisible to the untrained eye.

Tips & Tricks

The Search

Frequent and found in the same areas, making them easier to locate. The Alphonse guide team knows exactly where to find them across the different destinations. Each Seychelles atoll offers its own distinct style and approach when targeting them. Stingrays often act as magnets on the flats, drawing in various species, including permit, which are commonly targeted around feeding rays.

Tides

Generally, the best time to attempt to target permit is over the Neap Tide cycle when the water movement is slower. The fish are able to feed more comfortably and spend extended time on the flats due to the slower movement.

Tackle

The most commonly used setups when targeting permit are 8 or 9 weight rods and matching reels with smooth drags. Reels are spooled with 300 yards of 50lb backing and a tropical floating fly line to match.

Fleeing Crab Fly

The fleeing crab fly imitates exactly what its name suggests, i.e., a crab that is on the move. It is a simple pattern but highly effective. It can be tied in various colours and sizes. However, the most common colour is barred tan and white with orange rubber legs.

Spawning Shrimp

The spawning shrimp fly has a realistic look. As the name states, it imitates a shrimp carrying a belly full of eggs, making a scrumptious potential meal for a bonefish! It works so well because it’s one of the biggest bonefish flies we use. The bigger the fly, the bigger the reward will be for the fish.
