Platte Island
Platte Island, named after its flat appearance, is a small, isolated island located 130km south of Mahé. This has remarkably remained relatively uninhabited until the Waldorf Astoria Hotel was constructed in 2023. Platte is recognised as a pseudo-atoll because it lacks a lagoon, instead featuring a barrier reef that creates a lagoon-like environment on the western side of the Atoll. The barrier reef stretches for 7.4 kilometres in length and 1 kilometre in width, offering excellent wadeable flats. Additionally, the submerged reef area with scattered pancake flats is much larger, providing ideal conditions for hunting ambush predators such as GTs and grouper.
Fly Fishing on Platte Island
The fish populations surrounding Platte remain among the most pristine in the world, offering exciting flats, sight-fishing and venturing a bit further; the reef topography provides exceptional bluewater fishing experiences.
Fishing the flats of Platte is unique compared to the rest of our atolls, with the ability to access all areas throughout the tidal cycle. This means that short targeted fish sessions are the way to go, allowing anglers to spend time with their families as well as getting some great fishing in. Platte is home to a good population of Indo-Pacific permit, coming in as the second best destination to target this species in the seychelles. Although anglers focus on permit, the flats are pristine and alive with a variety of sought after species like bonefish, triggerfish, bluefin trevally, grouper and giant trevally. The area offers equally thrilling fishing for species like sailfish, wahoo, dogtooth tuna and yellowfin tuna offshore.
